COrner marking:
Corner marking is used to keep everyone together so no one gets lost. Basically meaning you mark each corner in the route with a rider so following riders know where to go.
At the beginning of the ride the Ride leader will be pointed out and the Last rider will be pointed out.
The Last Rider remains at the back behind the group and collects the riders marking corners.
Never overtake the ride leader or be behind the last rider.
When there is a corner or change in route the lead rider will point to a safe and visible spot for the corner marker to pull over and mark, to give the riders enough time to see the turn.
If you are the first rider behind the leader you must mark the next corner or change in route by pulling over when signaled to.
When pulled over make sure you are not in a dangerous spot or obstructing traffic. Leave your blinker on in the direction change you are marking. ( so even if you are pulled over to the left but the corner your marking is a right leave your right blinker on)
Do not leave the corner you are marking until the Last rider Arrives and signals you to move on. You then move off in front of the last rider and proceed through the group.
The next rider behind the Leader then becomes the next corner marker and continues to follow until the process is repeated on the next corner.
Don’t get behind the Ride Leader if you do not want to corner mark.
Don’t just pull over to the side of the road if you think you might be next to corner mark and so think its “clever” to suddenly drop back… (You’ll cause at best a bit of a traffic jam as everyone behind you either slows up or pull over behind you ).
Don’t get in the situation to corner mark if you have either no indicators or built in indicators that are not clearly seen… so if this is the case, then do not get near the front of the group.
Wait for tail end charlie to tell you to leave your post… This can seem like an eternity if its a large group / some time since last regroup , but if you leave that corner early, then all the people behind you will get lost and you’ll have a lot of coffees to buy the ones who hunt you down.
If you think you are next to corner mark then “think well ahead”.. you need to stop in a position that (a) your not going to get hit by another rider or car (b) your well back from the corner that you are marking so that the approaching bikes can see you and have enough time to cleanly check their position, clearly indicate to others around and change road position to safely negotiate the corner you pointing to turn at.
